HYEM is an exchange-traded fund that passively tracks a benchmark index of U.S. dollar-denominated bonds issued by non-sovereign emerging market issuers. To maintain its strategy, the fund commits at least 80% of its total assets to securities included in that index. The bonds it holds carry below investment grade ratings, placing them in the high yield (commonly referred to as junk) credit category, and are issued across both major domestic markets in emerging economies and the international Eurobond market.
The fund focuses on the corporate segment of emerging market debt rather than sovereign government bonds, exposing investors to private-sector credit risk in developing economies. By denominating holdings in U.S. dollars, the fund avoids direct currency risk from local emerging market currencies, though it remains subject to issuer default risk associated with sub-investment grade credit. Launched in 2012, HYEM provides access to a specialized fixed income niche that combines emerging market growth exposure with the income characteristics of high yield credit.
