Friedman Industries, Incorporated (FRD) is a U.S.-based steel manufacturer and processor headquartered in Longview, Texas, operating since 1965. The company runs two business segments: Flat-Roll Products, which processes hot-rolled coils into sheets and plates and offers toll processing and storage services for customer-owned material, and Tubular Products, which produces line pipe, oil country tubular goods (OCTG), and structural pipe. Its customers are primarily metals distributors and fabricators serving end markets such as metal buildings, railcars, heavy equipment, tanks and containers, trailers, and other fabricated metal products. The toll processing component of the Flat-Roll segment is a fee-for-service model in which the company earns revenue per ton processed without taking ownership of the underlying steel, providing a relatively counter-cyclical buffer against the volume-driven margins of its manufactured products. FRDs exposure to OCTG manufacturing also links a portion of revenue to U.S. oil and gas drilling activity, making the company sensitive to energy-sector capital spending in addition to broader construction and industrial demand.
- Hot-rolled coil pricing trends drive Flat-Roll margins
- Oil and gas drilling activity boosts tubular pipe demand
- Steel import tariffs protect domestic pricing power
