Description: EVMO Eaton Vance Mortgage

Eaton Vance Mortgage Opportunities ETF (EVMO) is a securitized bond ETF that invests at least 80% of its assets in mortgage-related securities. Its portfolio may include a range of mortgage-backed instruments such as pass-through securities, collateralized mortgage obligations (CMOs), stripped mortgage-backed securities (SMBS), commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), and inverse floating rate obligations. The fund may also allocate up to 50% of its net assets to high yield securities, commonly known as junk bonds, giving it some flexibility to pursue higher-yielding segments of the fixed income market.

As a securitized bond ETF, EVMO provides investors with exposure to the U.S. mortgage-backed securities market, a segment of the fixed income sector that pools together home and commercial real estate loans and repackages them as tradable securities. The inclusion of high yield securities reflects a broader strategy within mortgage-focused funds to enhance yield through credit risk, often by investing in non-agency or subprime MBS that carry higher default risk than government-backed offerings.

Headlines to Watch Out For
  • Fed rate cuts compress mortgage-backed security spreads and yields
  • Rising mortgage rates trigger prepayment risk across MBS portfolio
  • High yield bond allocation exposed to widening credit spreads
