Description: FXU Utilities AlphaDEX Fund

The First Trust Utilities AlphaDEX® Fund (FXU) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track a modified equal-dollar weighted index composed of utilities stocks selected from the Russell 1000® Index. The fund commits at least 90% of its net assets to the securities in its underlying index, using First Trusts proprietary AlphaDEX® methodology-a quantitative, rules-based stock selection approach designed to identify holdings that may outperform traditional market-cap-weighted benchmarks. The fund launched on May 8, 2007, and falls within the small-cap ETF category with approximately $836 million in assets under management.

The utilities sector, in which FXU invests, includes companies that provide essential infrastructure services such as electricity generation and distribution, natural gas transmission and distribution, and water utilities. These businesses are generally characterized by regulated revenue streams and lower volatility relative to broader equity markets, which often makes utilities-focused ETFs appealing to income-oriented and risk-averse investors.
