The iShares Global REIT ETF (REET) is designed to track the performance of publicly-listed real estate investment trusts (REITs) and their local equivalents across both developed and emerging markets. The fund invests at least 80% of its assets in the component securities of its underlying index (or securities with substantially identical economic characteristics) and may allocate up to 20% of its assets to derivatives such as futures, options, and swap contracts, as well as cash and cash equivalents. REITs are companies that own, operate, or finance income-producing real estate, and they are typically required by law to distribute a significant portion of their taxable income to shareholders in the form of dividends. Launched in July 2014, REET provides investors with broad, diversified exposure to the global real estate sector through a single, exchange-traded vehicle.
