The Schwab 1-5 Year Corporate Bond ETF (SCHJ) is a passively managed index fund that seeks to track the performance of an index composed of U.S. investment grade, taxable corporate bonds. To be eligible for inclusion, bonds must have maturities between one and five years and at least $300 million in outstanding face value, which helps ensure adequate market liquidity. Under normal market conditions, the fund commits to investing at least 90% of its net assets in securities held within the underlying index.
As a short-term bond ETF in the fixed income sector, SCHJ focuses on the front end of the corporate debt maturity spectrum. By limiting holdings to bonds with relatively short maturities, the fund is generally positioned to reduce interest rate risk and duration exposure compared to longer-dated bond funds, while still providing access to investment grade corporate issuers.
- Fed rate cut expectations lower short-term corporate bond yields
- Investment grade credit spreads tighten as corporate earnings remain resilient
- Treasury yield curve movements drive 1-5 year bond price volatility
