The Communication Services Select Sector SPDR® Fund (XLC) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the Communication Services sector, as defined by the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS). The fund invests at least 95% of its total assets in the securities comprising its underlying index and is structured as a non-diversified fund. Its holdings span five industry groups: diversified telecommunication services, wireless telecommunication services, media, entertainment, and interactive media & services.
The Communication Services sector was created in 2018 following a GICS reclassification that merged the prior Telecom Services sector with select media and internet-related companies that were previously categorized under Consumer Discretionary and Information Technology. As one of 11 GICS sectors, it groups together traditional telecom carriers, broadcasters, content producers, and digital platform companies, reflecting the convergence of telecommunications, media, and internet-based business models.
